How to Care for Handcrafted Pens and Wooden Bowls

A little finish-specific care helps you enjoy your handcrafted piece. Here is our practical guide to refills, pen finishes, wooden bowl care and choosing the right bowl for food.

Refill compatibility: match the exact pen

Refills are not one-size-fits-all. Check your product listing and keep the old refill as a reference. Our Desert iron wood Slimline EDC Click Pen and Bolt Action Tec pen in Brown Mallee Burl use Parker-style refills. The Filabella twist pen in mixed hardwood uses a Cross-style refill.

For rollerballs, the Chrome Vertex in Thuya Burl and Brass RAW in flame box elder use Schneider Topball 850 refills. The Chrome Jr. Morgan and Jr. George listings specify Schmidt 888 refills. The Classic Elite 2 figured Claro Walnut listing specifies a Pilot G2 bold 1 mm refill. These are model-specific examples, not interchangeable recommendations for every pen.

Fountain pens use an ink system rather than a ballpoint refill. Ask us to confirm the cartridge or converter for your exact model before buying a replacement. If you are unsure about any pen, send us the product name or a photo of the pen and its existing refill. Explore our hand-turned pens to find your model.

Pen finish care: should I oil or wax it?

For our pens with a cyanoacrylate (CA) finish, wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not add oil or wax. This guidance is for the CA-finished pens, not a blanket instruction for every material or finish we offer. If your listing does not identify the finish, ask us before applying a care product.

Cleaning wooden bowls

For our bowls finished with CASL Creations board butter or beeswax and mineral oil, handwash briefly with mild soap. Do not soak them or put them in the dishwasher. A short handwash is the approved cleaning method, not a long stay in the sink.

Drying after washing

Towel-dry promptly, then allow the bowl to air-dry fully before putting it away. Do not store it while it is still damp.

Storage and finish maintenance

Store bowls dry and away from heat. When their finish needs replenishing, use only CASL Creations-approved board butter. Ask us for application instructions for your particular piece rather than substituting an unverified oil or polish.

Food-contact use: choose the right bowl

Our Cherry bowl and Birds eye Maple burl bowl are approved for food-contact use. The Siberian Elm catch-all bowl and Juniper bowl with heart filigree are for non-food use, such as jewelry, keepsakes or display. A food-safe finish alone does not mean every bowl is intended for food.

Before using an approved bowl with hot, acidic or wet foods, ask us to confirm suitability for that specific use. Follow the handwashing and drying instructions above after use. Browse our wooden bowls and check the individual piece before choosing it for your table.
